Based on the short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, Don’t Look Now charts the fractured relationship of a married couple (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) staying in Venice in the aftermath of their daughter’s death. As they become entangled in the premonitions of a blind clairvoyant, this study of grief and recovery is touched upon by the supernatural. Director Nicholas Roeg’s fluid storytelling and use of recurrent motifs – in particular, the colour red – mark an unsettling visual style that is mirrored in the gloom and decay of Venetian Gothic architecture.
